Roast Magazine is a major part of the specialty coffee industry, and it’s popularly known for awarding top honors in 2 main categories; Macro Roaster of the Year and Micro Roaster of the Year. The Macro Roaster of the Year award is given to companies that roast more than 100,000 pounds of coffee every year, while the Micro Roaster of the Year category is reserved for companies that roast under 100,000 pounds of coffee every year.

Roast Magazine only awards roasters that have demonstrated superior quality, have a strong commitment to equity, inclusion & diversity, promote community and employee education, and are dedicated to sustainability. They recently announced their 2022 winners in the 18th annual Roaster of the Year competition: Huckleberry Roasters and Little Waves Coffee Roasters. Both companies will feature in the November/December 2021 issue of the trade publication.

Little Waves Coffee Roasters for the 2022 Micro Roaster of the Year Award

It has more than 30 part-time and full-time employees and currently runs 3 cafes and a roasting facility in Durham, North Carolina. The majority owners of Little Waves Coffee Roasters are Latina, and it’s a women-forward company that’s also inclusive. It’s like a small society of different cultures, faiths & beliefs, languages, and cultures that are focused on quality service provision. This company roasted more than 58,000 pounds of coffee during the past year.

Huckleberry Roasters for 2021 Macro Roaster of the Year

Huckleberry Roasters was launched in 2011 by co-owners Jason Farrar and Koan Goedman. Its roasting headquarters are located in Denver, but it also has 2 retail locations and is kept running by 29 part-time and full-time employees. Huckleberry was founded on the conviction that businesses aren’t that soulless enterprises: they should embrace a sense of culture and collective community both locally and globally.
